QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH VISITS WALES


THE QUEEN AND DUKE OF EDINBURGH RECREATED A FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPH WHEN THEY RETURNED TO THE SCENE OF THE PRINCE OF WALES INVESTITURE. THEY WERE GIVEN A TOUR AROUND CAERNARFON CASTLE IN NORTH WALES, WHERE THE PRINCE FORMALLY TOOK ON HIS TITLE IN 1969. THEY RECREATED THE FAMOUS IMAGE WHEN THEY STEPPED ON TO THE QUEEN'S GATE BALCONY AT THE CASTLE IN FRONT OF THE CROWDS BELOW. THE ROYAL COUPLE WALKED AROUND THE ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS MUSEUM WITHIN THE CASTLE, WHERE THEY LOOKED AT ARTICLES FROM THE FIRST WORLD WAR. A GOLD MEDAL FOR POETRY GIVEN TO SIEGFRIED SASSOON BY THE QUEEN IN 1957 WAS ONE OF THE OBJECTS SHOWN TO HER. SHE SAID TO LFT GEN JONATHON RILEY, THE MASTER OF ROYAL ARMORIES, THAT IT MUST BE DIFFICULT TO PICK THE RIGHT THINGS TO PUT ON DISPLAY. THE QUEEN WAS ACCOMPANIED BY TOWN MAYOR HYWEL ROBERTS ON THE TOUR, AND THE DUKE WALKED ALONGSIDE THE MAYOR'S WIFE MARGARET ROBERTS. HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN WAVED WALES FLAGS AND CHEERED AS THE ROYAL PARTY MADE THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CASTLE GROUNDS. THE QUEEN WORE A PINK DRESS, WITH A HAT AND COAT OF THE SAME COLOUR, WHILE THE DUKE WORE A BLUE SUIT. AFTER LEAVING THE CASTLE, THE COUPLE BOARDED A BLACK PULLMAN CARRIAGE FOR A TEN-MINUTE JOURNEY ON THE NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY TO DINAS STATION. THERE SHE UNVEILED THE NAME OF THE FIRST CLASS CARRIAGE AS GLASLYN.
