CALDER, WHO DIED IN 1976 AT THE AGE OF 78, FIRST TOOK ART CLASSES IN NEW YORK BEFORE TRAVELING IN THE 1920s TO FRANCE, WHERE HE DEBUTED HIS SIGNATURE MOBILE. IN 1933, HE MOVED TO A CONNECTICUT FARM AND HE CONTINUED TO WORK UNTIL HIS DEATH. CHRISTIE'S SAID THE ENAMEL 'BROAD ST AND WALL ST' SIGN WAS BOUGHT TUESDAY BY AN UNIDENTIFIED PHONE BIDDER. THE AUCTIONEER HAD ESTIMATED ITS VALUE AT $60,000 TO $80,000 BEFORE THE SALE. THE SIGN STOOD IN FRONT OF THE FORMER HEADQUARTERS OF JP MORGAN & CO IN NEW YORK. THE IMAGES IN A BRANCH OF THE CATACOMBS IF ST TECLA NEAR ST PAUL'S BASILICA, JUST OUTSIDE THE WALLS OF ANCIENT ROME, WERE PAINTED AT THE END OF THE 4th CENTURY OR THE START OF THE 5th CENTURY. ARCHAEOLOGISTS BELIEVE THAT THE IMAGES MAY HAVE BEEN AMONG THOSE THAT MOST INFLUENCED LATER ARTISTS' DEPICTIONS OF THE FACES OF CHRIST'S MOST IMPORTANT EARLY FOLLOWERS. THIRTEEN YEARS AFTER DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES DREW THE WORLD'S ATTENTION TO THE HORRORS OF LAND MINES, PRINCE HARRY HAS REKINDLED HER LEGACY WITH A VISIT TO A MINEFIELD IN MOZAMBIQUE. THE PRINCE SPENT TWO DAYS LEARNING ABOUT THE WORK OF THE HALO TRUST, THE SAME BRITISH CHARITY THAT THE PRINCESS SO FAMOUSLY VISITED IN ANGOLA EIGHT MONTHS BEFORE HER DEATH. PRINCE HARRY IS ACUTELY AWARE OF THE CONTROVERSY THAT SURROUNDED HIS MOTHER'S VISIT TO AFRICA IN JANUARY 1997, WHEN THE THEN JUNIOR DEFENSE MINISTER EARL HOWE DERIDED THE PRINCESS AS A LOOSE CANNON MEDDLING IN GOVERNMENT POLICY. AS WELL AS MEETING VICTIMS OF LANDMINE BLASTS, INCLUDING A 14 YEAR OLD BOY WHO LOST A LEG LAST YEAR, THE PRINCE WAS TAUGHT MINE-CLEARING TECHNIQUES AND PERSONALLY ATTACHED A DETONATOR TO A LIVE MINE BEFORE CARRYING OUT A CONTROLLED EXPLOSION FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. THE FIRST IN-DEPTH EXHIBITION OF THE WORK OF CRISTOBAL BALENCIAGA, THE MASTER SPANISH COUTURIER, WHO DOMINATED PARIS HAUTE COUTURE FOR MORE THAN THREE DECADES, WILL OPEN AT THE QUEEN SOFIA SPANISH INSTITUTE IN NEW YORK, IN NOVEMBER. THE EXHIBITION WILL BE THE FIRST TO CONSIDER THE IMPACT OF SPAIN'S CULTURE, HISTORY AND ART ON ONE OF ITS GREATEST 20th CENTURY SONS, THE LEGENDARY DESIGNER WHO WAS HAILED AS 'FASHION'S PICASSO' BY CECIL BEATON. THE EXHIBITION WILL EXAMINE THE INFLUENCES OF HIS DESIGNS OF THE COUNTRY'S GREAT ARTISTS, FROM ZURBARAN AND GOYA TO PICASSO AND MIRO, AND OF SPAIN'S RELIGIOUS DRESS AND CEREMONY, ITS ROYAL HISTORY, ITS REGIONAL COSTUME, ITS DANCE TRADITIONS, AND THE POWER AND SPLENDOR OF THE BULLFIGHT. TAIPEI FINE ARTS MUSEUM TO PRESENT 'MANET TO PICASSO: MASTERPIECES FROM THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART'


'MANET TO PICASSO: MASTERPIECES FROM THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART' IS TAIWAN'S FIRST TIME TO WORK WITH AN AMERICAN MUSEUM ON AN INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION. THE ARTWORKS ARE FROM 33 MASTERS, INCLUDING 53 OIL PAINTINGS AND 5 BRONZE SCULPTURES. THE EXHIBITION PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND STYLES OF WESTERN ART FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO CONTEMPORARY AVANT-GARDE ART. STARTING FROM MANET, THE IMPRESSIONISM MASTER IN MODERN CITY LIFE AND PEOPLE OF THE END OF THE 19th CENTURY, THE EXHIBITION DISPLAYS ARTWORKS OF IMPRESSIONISM PAINTERS WHO ROSE FROM 1874 TO 1886, SUCH AS BOUDIN, DEGAS, MONET, RENOIR, PISSARRO, CASSATT AND OTHERS. BONHAM'S, LONDON, ARE TO SELL THE TARDIS USED TO TRANSPORT CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON AS THE 9th INCARNATION OF DOCTOR WHO, IN THEIR UPCOMING ENTERTAINMENT MEMORABILIA AUCTION ON 23.JUNE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM'S MAJOR AUTUMN EXHIBITION WILL PRESENT AND EXPLORE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN BELIEFS ABOUT LIFE AFTER DEATH. 'JOURNEY THROUGH THE AFTERLIFE: ANCIENT EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD' WILL SHOWCASE THE RICH TEXTUAL AND VISUAL MATERIAL FROM THE BRITISH MUSEUM'S UNPARALLELED COLLECTION OF BOOK OF THE DEAD PAPYRI. THE 'BOOK', USED FOR OVER 1500 YEARS BETWEEN 1600 BC AND 100 AD, IS NOT A SINGLE TEXT, BUT A COMPILATION OF SPELLS THOUGHT TO EQUIP THE DEAD WITH KNOWLEDGE AND POWER WHICH WOULD GUIDE THEM SAFELY THROUGH THE DANGERS OF THE HEREAFTER AND ULTIMATELY ETERNAL LIFE.
