CHRISTIE'S TO SELL RARE DEPICTION OF 'LOST' PALACE

CHRISTIE'S ANNOUNCED RECENTLY THAT THEY WILL BE OFFERING AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE AND BEAUTIFUL DEPICTION OF THE 'LOST' PALACE OF NONSUCH AT THE AUCTION OF OLD MASTERS AND 19th CENTURY ART ON 7.DECEMBER. COMMISSIONED BY KING HENRY VIII IN ORDER TO OUTSHINE THE GREAT PALACES BUILT BY HIS RIVAL KING FRANCOIS I OF FRANCE, THE BUILDING OF NONSUCH PALACE BEGAN IN 1538 AND TOOK 8 YEARS TO COMPLETE. IT STOOD FOR LESS THAN 150 YEARS HAVING FALLEN INTO DESPAIR IN THE 1680s. THE EARLIEST AND MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY DEPICTION OF BRITAIN'S MOST AMBITIOUS RENAISSANCE COMMISSION, THE PRESENT DRAWING IS AN EXTREMELY VALUABLE RECORD OF THE 'LOST PALACE AND HAS BEN SEEN IN PUBLIC ONLY TWICE BEFORE; AT SUTTON PLACE IN 1983 AND AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY, WASHINGTON, IN 1986. DESCRIBED AS 'THE ONLY SURVIVING IMPRESSION OF WHAT NONSUCH REALLY LOOKED LIKE', IT IS EXPECTED TO REALIZE £800,000 TO £1,200,000. THE STUNNING WATERCOLOUR WAS EXECUTED BY JORIS HOEFNAGEL WHO PROVIDED THE ILLUSTRATIONS FOR CIVITATES ORBIS TERRARUM, AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT RECORD OF ALL MOST IMPORTANT BUILDINGS AND CITYSCAPES IN EUROPE FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1572. ALMOST ALL OF THE 546 DRAWINGS MADE FOR THE BOOK ARE NOW IN PUBLIC COLLECTIONS, WITH THE MAJORITY, MORE THAN 60, IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM IN VIENNA. HOEFNAGEL EXECUTED THE PRESENT WORK IN SITU AT NONSUCH AND USED IT TO CREATE A LATER, LESS DETAILED DEPICTION THAT WAS USED FOR THE ENGRAVING. THE LATER VERSION IS NOW IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM. THE PRESENT WORK WAS ACQUIRED IN THE MID-19th CENTURY BY SIR ALFRED MORRISON OF FONTHILL, ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED BRITISH COLLECTORS OF THE LATE 19th CENTURY, AND HAS SINCE PASSED BY DESCENT.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF NONSUCH BEGAN ON 23.APRIL.1538, THE THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF HENRY VIIIs ACCESSION TO THE THRONE, ON THE SITE OF TE VILLAGE OF CUDDINGTON, NEAR EWELL, SURRY. THE PALACE'S PRIMARY FUNCTION WAS TO SERVE AS A HUNTING LODGE; MORE IMPORTANTLY IT WAS CONCEIVED AS A VISUAL EXPRESSION OF TUDOR SUPREMACY BOTH TEMPORAL AND SPIRITUAL, A CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH OF HENRY'S FIRST LEGITIMATE SON (THE FUTURE EDWARD VI) ON 12.OCTOBER.1537 AND, IN FLATTENING THE PARISH CHURCH OF CUDDINGTON, IT LITERALLY DEMONSTRATED HENRY'S NEW DOMINANCE AS HEAD OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT WAS PROOF THAT HENRY WAS EQUAL TO THE ARCHITECTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF FRANCOIS I OF FRANCE. IT WAS NAMED 'NONSUCH' AS NO OTHER PALACE COULD EQUAL ITS MAGNIFICENCE. STILL INCOMPLETE WHEN HENRY VIII DIED IN 1547, NONSUCH WAS SOLD TO HENRY FITZALAN EARL OF ARUNDEL, BY MARY I IN 1557. IT RETURNED TO ROYAL HANDS IN 1592, WHEN ARUNDEL'S HEIR LORD LUMLEY GAVE IT TO ELIZABETH I IN SETTLEMENT OF A DEBT. IT WAS EVENTUALLY GRANTED BY CHARLES II TO BARBARA VILLIERS, COUNTESS OF CASTLEMAINE, IN 1670, WHEN SHE WAS CREATED BARONESS OF NONSUCH, COUNTESS OF SOUTHAMPTON AND DUCHESS OF CLEVELAND. IN LATE 1682 SHE TOOK THE STEP OF BEGINNING TO DISMANTLE THE INNER COURT, AS MERELY THE FIRST STAGE OF AN ORDERED DEMOLITION WHICH ENABLED HER TO SELL THE RAW MATERIALS FOR MONEY WITH WHICH TO PAY OFF HER GAMBLING DEBTS. BY 1690 THE PALACE WAS ALL BUT GONE, AND FOR ALMOST FOUR HUNDRED YEARS ITS FABULOUS APPEARANCE WAS ONLY KNOWN THROUGH WRITTEN RECORDS AND THE FEW KNOWN VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS.

THE FINIALS WARE AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS EVER TO APPEAR AT AUCTION. THE ONE THAT SOLD RECENTLY WAS IN THE POSSESSION OF THE SAME SCOTTISH FAMILY FOR THE PAST 200 YEARS COMING DOWN TO THE PRESENT OWNER BY DIRECT DESCENT. THE FIRST FINIAL SOLD AT BONHAMS HAD LAIN IN AN ENGLISH CASTLE, FOR AT LEST 100 YEARS AND THEN PUT IN A BANK VAULT, UNKNOWN TO TIPU ENTHUSIASTS AND SCHOLARS. MUCH TO THE DISAPPROVAL OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, LORD WELLESLEY (LATER THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON). THE THRONE WAS BROKEN UP SO QUICKLY FOLLOWING THE FALL OF SERINGAPATAM THAT LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE FATE OF THE REMAINING THRONE RELICS; HOWEVER, A LARGE GOLD TIGER HEAD FROM THE FRONT OF THE THRONE PLATFORM NOW RESIDES AT WINDSOR CASTLE ALONG WITH A JEWELED BIRD WHICH WAS PRESENTED TO QUEEN CHARLOTTE THE WIFE OF GEORGE III. ANOTHER SURVIVING FINIAL CAN BE FOUND AT POWIS CASTLE, ACQUIRED BY THE SECOND LADY CLIVE IN INDIA.

BONHAMS TO SELL RARE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN TABLE

A STRIKING, CIRCULAR TABLE ORIGINALLY PLACED IN THE GOLDEN DRAWING ROOM IN THE WINTER PALACE, THE MAIN RESIDENCE OF THE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL FAMILY IN ST PETERSBURG, WILL BE SOLD IN THE RUSSIAN SALE AT BONHAMS NEW BOND STREET ON 1.DECEMBER. ESTIMATED AT £150,000 - £200,000, THE INTRICATE DESIGN AND RANGE OF MATERIALS, FROM CORAL TO ONYX AND TURQUOISE, REFLECTS THE LEGENDARY OPULENCE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE. THE TABLE WAS ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED AS A GIFT FOR THE EMPRESS ALEXANDRA, THE WIFE OF TSAR NICHOLAS I AND THE TABLE BECAME PART OF THE ORIGINAL FURNISHINGS OF THE IMPERIAL WINTER PALACE. THE TABLE WAS THEN PLACED WITHIN THE GOLDEN DRAWING ROOM, WHICH WAS USED BY THE FUTURE EMPRESS MARIA ALEXSANDROVNA, AND WAS RENOWNED AS THE MOST LAVISHLY DECORATED ROOM IN HER PERSONAL SUITE. THE GOLDEN DRAWING ROOM WAS USED FOR PRIVATE RECEPTIONS AND CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS FOR THE IMPERIAL FAMILY. THE STORMING OF THE WINTER PALACE BECAME AN ICONIC SYMBOL OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. IN THE LATE 1920s MANY PRIVATE ROOMS OF THE IMPERIAL FAMILY WERE STRIPPED OF THEIR ORIGINAL FURNISHINGS AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT MIGHT REMIND THE PUBLIC ABOUT RUSSIA'S IMPERIAL PAST. MOST OF THE FURNISHINGS, INCLUDING THE TABLE, WERE SOLD THROUGH ANTIKVARIAT, WHICH WAS A STATE-RUN COMMISSION SHOP THAT CATERED TO FOREIGNERS AND DIPLOMATS. THE TABLE ULTIMATELY ENDED UP IN GERMANY. TODAY THE GOLDEN DRAWING ROOM IN THE WINTER PALACE HOUSES PART OF THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM COLLECTION. THOUGH THE ROOM HAS RETAINED ITS ORIGINAL DECOR, FEW OF ITS ORIGINAL FURNISHINGS HAVE SURVIVED. A SPOKESPERSON FOR BONHAMS SAID: 'ITEMS FROM FORMER RUSSIAN IMPERIAL PALACES ARE INCREDIBLY RARE, AND A FEW COME WITH SUCH REMARKABLY DOCUMENTED PROVENANCE. THIS TABLE IS AN EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLECTORS TO NOT ONLY ACQUIRE A RUSSIAN DECORATIVE MASTERPIECE, BUT TO PROCURE THEIR VERY OWN PIECE OF RUSSIAN HISTORY.'

SWEDEN CELEBRATES TEH WEDDING OF CROWN PRINCESS VICTORIA

SWEDEN HOSTED THE BIGGEST AND MOST STUNNING WEDDING SINCE THAT OF PRINCE CHARLES AND LADY DIANA SPENCER, WHEN CROWN PRINCESS VICTORIA MARRIED DANIEL WESTLING. THE MARRIAGE, A LOVE MATCH THAT HAS WEATHERED THE DISAPPROVAL OF THE BRIDE'S FATHER, KING CARL XVI GUSTAF, WHO WAS INITIALLY HORRIFIED THAT HIS HEIR WAS MARRYING HER FORMER FITNESS TRAINER, AND GROWING INDIFFERENCE FROM THE SWEDISH PUBLIC, WHO HAVE INCREASINGLY QUESTIONED THE MONARCHY'S MODERN RELEVANCE, TOOK PLACE IN STOCKHOLM'S
STORKYRKAN CATHEDRAL LATE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. DETERMINED TO MARK THE HISTORIC DAY WITH A MAJESTIC CEREMONY THE SWEDISH ROYAL FAMILY HAD INVITED SEVERAL CROWNED HEADS OF EUROPE FOR THEIR DAUGHTER'S MARRIAGE TO WESTLING, WHO NOW BECOMES HRH PRINCE DANIEL, DUKE OF VASTERGOTLAND. AS THE COUPLE STOOD AT THE CATHEDRAL ALTER AT 3.30 YESTERDAY, COINCIDENTALLY THE SAME CHURCH IN WHICH THE CROWN PRINCESS'S PARENTS, KING CARL XVI GUSTAF AND QUEEN SILVIA, WERE MARRIED AND ON THE DATE OF THEIR 34th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, VICTORIA LOOKED REGAL AND DEMURE IN AN IVORY SILK SHORT-SLEEVED OFF THE SHOULDER GOWN, DESIGNED BY PAR ENGSHEDEN. THE NEWLY CREATED PRINCE APPEARED CONFIDENT AND IMMACULATELY GROOMED, A FAR CRY FROM THE LONG-HAIRED, RATHER SCRUFFY YOUNG MAN WHO WAS FIRST PICTURED IN THE SWEDISH NEWSPAPERS EIGHT YEARS AGO WHEN THE NEWS BROKE THAT THE CROWN PRINCESS WAS DATING HIM. AS HE UTTERED AN ENTHUSIASTIC 'JA' DURING HIS WEDDING VOWS, HIS EYES FILLED WITH TEARS AS HE TURNED TO SMILE AT HIS NEW WIFE. WHILE PRINCE EDWARD, THE EARL OF WESSEX, AND HIS WIFE SOPHIE, THE COUNTESS, REPRESENTED THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY, THE CONGREGATION INCLUDED THE ELITE AMONG EUROPE'S ROYALS. AMONG THE OTHER EUROPEAN ROYALS WERE QUEEN MARGRETHE AND PRINCE CONSORT HENRIK OF DENMARK; QUEEN SOFIA OF SPAIN; KING HARALD AND QUEEN SONJA OF NORWAY; QUEEN BEATRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS' PRINCESS MARTHA LOUISE OF NORWAY AND HER HUSBAND ARI BEHN; PRINCESS LAURENTIEN AND PRINCE CONSTANTIJN OF HOLLAND; CROWN PRINCESS MARY AND CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK OF DENMARK AND PRINCESS MADELEINE OF SWEDEN. AS THE CEREMONY GOT UNDER WAY THE CHURCH BELLS RANG AND STOCKHOLM'S STREETS THRONGED WITH WELL-WISHERS. THE CELEBRATIONS WILL LAST SEVERAL DAYS AND INCLUDE A PRIVATE DINNER AT DROTTNINGHOLM PALACE, A LUNCH AT THE CITY HALL OF STOCKHOLM AND A GALA PERFORMANCE AT THE CITY'S CONCERT HALL. THE £1.7 MILLION SPECTACLE AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED CATHEDRAL WAS WATCHED BY ALMOST FIVE MILLION VIEWERS ACROSS EUROPE AND ON STOCKHOLM'S STREETS CROWDS WATCHED THE CEREMONY ON SPECIALLY INSTALLED TELEVISION SCREENS. THE CROWN PRINCESS WAS ESCORTED DOWN THE AISLE BY HER FATHER, THE KING, RATHER THAN WALKING WITH HER HUSBAND TO BE, WHICH IS CUSTOMARY FOR SWEDISH BRIDES. THE STREETS WERE AWASH WITH SWEDISH FLAGS AND 40,000 ROSES, CARNATIONS, LILIES AND HYDRANGEAS DECKED THE LAMP-POSTS ANS SHOP FRONTS. ON SATURDAY EVENING, SWEDES CELEBRATED LONG INTO THE NIGHT, TOASTING THEIR ROYAL BRIDE AND WELCOMING THE NEW ADDITION TO THE ROYAL FAMILY: THE COMMONER WHO OVERCAME ALL OPPOSITION TO BECOME A ROYAL PRINCE.
